For some reason, I totally forgot about this mix - 'til an old friend posted an mp3 of it the other day. I downloaded it and noticed that the mix was tracked and it created small gaps. Being the particular person I am, I found the mix in an old laptop and pieced all the tracks all together tightly. It took a few hours, but I cleaned it up as much as possible.

I made this mix in 2000, when I was really into instrumental Hip Hop. At the time, I wanted to make a mix with long, smooth blends and minimal tricks. The focus was on the groove, the feeling created when hearing two records mixed together and both of them kinda "questioning and answering" each other. For running through the mix a couple times before I laid it down, it's not too shabby!

This was done in two takes. One for Side A and one for Side B. It was recorded onto DAT, then dubbed to cassette and copied a few hundred times on cassettes for mass consumption. Did I say cassette? WOW. I remember burning out a tape player dubbing them.

Looking back, this makes sense, considering I was part of a crew that was composed of mostly House DJs. So their style of mixing rubbed off on me. This was an evolutionary step in my djing, prior to this it was all quick and drop mixing. This was so important for me. Looking at it now, in a way, mixing more than 8 bars nowadays is sort of a lost art.

The image above is the artwork for the cassette. My dude Merrick did a great job on it. If you look it, I purposely made a silly face for the cover. What was I thinking? Anyway, I got a kick out of the shout outs as well.

While working on this mix today, it brought back memories of who I was then - what I was doing, who I was dating and where I was maturity-wise. I also thought about the point my friends were at then (most of them have stopped djing, real jobs, married, etc.) and how different things were.

Things were simpler.

The Do-Over.

I have to say that the Do-Over is one of the best events in the country. I had the tough job of following Rich Medina & DJ Scratch (of EPMD fame) last Sunday. Scratch was destroying it and DJ Spinderella & Rhettmatic were in the spot, which made things even tougher. So when I went on, I was pretty nervous (which never really happens), but I did my thing and it worked! The crowd was so open, from the first track on! It was such good time and I’m still kinda high off the experience!

Essential gear and things for djs.

Lollapalooza 2009.

Years of djing and managing shows has taught me what you should and should not do, from a production standpoint. I've wanted to create this list for some time, so I'm going to list some things that any serious dj should have if they are playing out on the regular. Trust me, you'll need these things when you're in a pinch. I am strapped with these items all the time and it makes life so much easier.

Power.

You can never have enough power strips. Many times, the places you gig at won't have any, you might be playing with other djs with extra gear and you just never know. I use the Furman SS-6B surge protector. It's has a 15ft cord, it's made out of metal, it has a circuit breaker and EMI/RFI noise attenuation. These things are built like a tank and never fails. I have two of these at all times. You can purchase them at Guitar Center.

Also, I keep a Phillips Travel Power Strip in my dj bag. For its compact size, it packs three outlets and a 10" cord. This is a life saver when you are playing somewhere and there's only one spot left on a power strip. My peeps at Turntablelab carry a Monster Cable joint that's just as good.

Cables.

Like power strips, having multiple cables (of every configuration) is a must. XLR, RCA, 1/4" and even an extra 1/8" for an ipod comes in handy. I use Live Wire cables from Guitar Center, which I highly recommend. The cables are thick and have metal headshells. These are beasts compared to the usual thin plastic cables you see often. They are pricier than your normal cables, but you get what you pay for. What makes this brand even better, is that they have a lifetime guarantee. They fail, you take them back to Guitar Center and you get a new pair for free. You can't beat that!

Oh yeah, having cable adapters (1/4", RCA, etc.) with those cables is a good look too...

DeoxIT Pen.

I. SWEAR. BY. THIS. I've been using this for years - way before computer programs came into the picture. If one of your decks is playing in mono, more than likely the contacts in the tonearm or headshell are dirty. If you are using backline gear or in-house club decks, this is the norm. The culprits are djs that lick the contacts on their headshells to get a better connection. I know that it's a quick fix, but in the long run, it will corrode the contacts in the tonearm. So to alleviate the problem, it has to be properly cleaned. This will do the trick and save your ass at the same time. If you're on Serato, YOU NEED THIS. If the decks are not putting out a proper stereo signal, you are screwed. Lastly, if cleaning the contacts doesn't work, you might have a bigger problem, like a shorted rca cable.

Gaffers Tape.

You gotta have this to tape down anything, especially cables on the floor/stage/ etc. I have avoided many drunk people eating it with this. I never work a big festival without it. A total no-brainer. You can get this from any music equipment shop.

Handcart.

Ah, the pleasures of lugging gear. It's so good on your back! If you know me, you know that my back is pretty messed up from years of carrying gear around. So I had to find a solution to ease my back. After some searching, I found the Multi-Cart R2 Micro at Guitar Center. I can put my entire dj rig on it - turntables, mixer, effects, cable bag and powered monitor with no problem. You can roll over curbs with this and it folds into a small size for storage. It's the best $100 I've ever spent! It's a big help when you are parked a good distance away from the venue.

Powered Monitor.

In my opinion, having your own powered monitor is important. When doing gigs locally, you should do this. Obviously, having no monitor makes the night a long one. That said, if you're going to have your own, get something that's good.

I use a Yorkville 100KW Power Wedge. It has 100 watts of power, separate treble & bass controls and multiple audio connection options. I've used this model for over 10 years and it's by far the best monitor ever. It's super loud, sounds clean and doesn't overheat and clip like Mackie and JBL monitors. Look into getting one!

I guess that's it! Here are some other random things to keep in mind...

- Extra headphones.

- An extra set of needles.

- SLIPMATS.

- Extra Serato/Traktor/Torq control records.

- Power adapter for dj computer program interface.

- A flashlight (thanks, John!).

- BE NICE TO THE SOUNDGUY!!!

I hope this helps out and your gigs become a much smoother and less stressful experience!

In the late 80's / early 90's, one of my best friends and myself would sneak out of our parent's house and check the dance clubs in Austin. The Planetarium, Curfew, Backstreet, Eastern Bloc & others were spots that we would hit up on the regular. Back then, it was really underground - no top 40, a slippage of some underground Hip Hop, but for the most part, it was obscure electronic dance music. It was really amazing and it opened my ears to a whole new world. Regardless of what I heard on any given weekend - whether it was Belgian, Acid House, Industrial, New Beat or whatever, I always headed to Sound Exchange or Waterloo Records the following Monday to cop the records I heard. During that time I amassed a pretty large record collection. I still have most of these records to this day. It was definitely a significant time in my development as a dj, record collector and music fan.

Sound Exchange's record shelves were stocked by DJ Roger Wilson. He always kept the store stocked with newest, most interesting records. What he bought for the store, he played at the club as well. His nights at Deca, Planetarium and Acropolis were influential in my early approach to dj'ing. Super down to earth, he always took the time to talk to me - for a kid that looked up to him, that was a big deal. Many years later, we still catch up whenever we see each other. Not too long ago, I was on Facebook and stumbled upon fan pages for some the Austin dance clubs from that time period. I was totally blown away. The Curfew page has close to 600 photos and it took me hours to go through them all. I was taken back. So crazy. These pages are truly a time capsule and a window to that era in Austin. A total precursor to Proteus and the rave scene in the mid to late 90's.

Btw, Austin wasn't the only place in Texas that had things going on. Dallas, Houston and even Waco had great scenes with Starck Club, Numbers, Power Tools, Club 6400 and 25th St. Theater.

So here's a mix from that time period. I recorded it at a bar that let me do my thing after operating hours. All the 12" records I heard at the clubs are in this mix and a little bit more. The mixing for the most part is good, considering I was fairly new to dj'ing and playing on an old school Rane MP 24. No channel EQ's, effects, nothing. Straight to cassette. So raw...

The sun is out!

The sunny weather this week is a welcomed change. It seems like months since we've seen a clear day in Austin. Today was great - the warmer temps made it perfect to go run around town and hit a patio for some coffee.

This is my childhood friend, Brodie. This is the dude. We went through tons of shit growing up - sneaking into clubs, figuring out the girls, living in record stores and just going through that crazy time we all know as THE TEENS. It didn't stop there, went through a lot in our early twenties as well...

Even though we haven't hung out in a few years, this guy is real family to me. He's been there and continues to be there for me. He's one of the few folks that I've known for the majority of my life...

With all that said, it's really cool that he's thinking about moving to Austin. He has a great thing going on in NYC with his wife, but they're both Texas kids at heart. So they are doing recon and making plans. I think now is a good time...

I am addicted to coffee! :)

I'm glad I hung out with Brodie the past two days, but it left very little time to sew up a few loose ends before this event tonight...

After the party, it's straight to the airport for Mexico. It looks like I'll be sleeping on the plane...

One word: AMAZING.

We went bigger at Perry's Stage this year and the crowd was bigger as well. From beginning to end, the place was a madhouse. Even with the rain on Friday, it did not stop the kids from having fun. Again, I worked my ass off and at the end of each day, I walked back to the hotel with an enormous sense of accomplishment. You'll see in the videos below how big it was this year. It was unreal...

It was a pleasure running the stage and I think that we have formed a great team of production folks to make this part of the festival bigger and better every year. It's just too cool!

Sorry about the lack of pictures. My point & shoot decided not to work on the first day of the festival. BUMMER.

seattle.

I got booked in Seattle and I turned it into a small vacation. Spent most of my booking money on the amazing food up there and linked up with some great people. One of the highlights was going to the Manik warehouse and copped some really cool gear and decks.

Speaking decks, I scored the boards with Charles Peterson's work. Manik used his shots of the Seattle grunge scene for their shirts and decks. Funny thing, his photography was all over the hotel we stayed at.

Overall it was a good trip. Now I am nursing a cold and grinding it out from my office 'til I feel better.

Lately, I've been really busy & not busy at the same time. It seems like everything hits all at once (I'm overwhelmed for a week or so), then it's chilled out for a minute. I guess it's better that way - where I can keep my sanity and have time to do things I really want to do. I need to work on my time management for sure...

Traveling out of state for gigs is something that I will not do 'til after the new year. Being stuck in airports forever the last few trips, it has really turned me off. For me, it's almost not worth it. I'd rather play in town, play for the folks here, get paid the same amount and DRIVE HOME TO MY HOUSE. Being comfortable and having a relaxed time is key. I know my feelings about this matter will change, but for now that is the plan.

If you know me, I am a big fan of regional music and the dance moves that go with it. When 'My Dougie' came out and I started to see folks doing that dance at Nasty's, I was amped! I'd play that song back to back (if i could) just to see the dance. The topper is that it's a Texas thing...

I had this cassette when I was kid. I was (and still am) a fan of the Minneapolis sound of the early to mid 80's. Years later, I bought the LP and 12", only to put them away. Anyway, I've had this desire to listen and play some of the tracks lately, so I spent an afternoon digging around and I found the record. When the timing is right I will throw it down.

These two tracks are my favorites. I heard a DJ play 'Affection' in NY a few years back and it was so awesome to hear it on a loud soundsystem. Check it out...

Notes from Lollapalooza 2008.

Lollapalooza was the greatest experience ever. DJ'ing and playing the role of stage manager enabled me to learn so much about festival production (which is was way more involved than throwing a party at bar), which is a good thing, since this is something I would like to do more in the future. The people that worked the stage with me were incredible and the DJ talent was dope as well...

This is a shot of the DJ stage the day before the festival. So nice and green. By festival's end, it was a different story.

Mad cables and gear.

So the night before the fest, I opened for Mark Ronson at House of Blues. So much fun! Seeing Plastic Little jump out on stage for a few songs was a pleasant surprise.

On day one, the Chicago dudes killed it. Willy Joy and Zebo repped properly and the crowd loved it.

After shutting down the DJ stage on day one, I walked by the Radiohead set and it was an amazing scene. 50,000 people...

On day two, Devlin and Darko hit the stage. Their set was one of my favorites that weekend.

Later that day, Perry Farrell, his wife, Slash and Samantha Ronson performed at the DJ stage. It was a crazy - mad photographers, press and celebs made it a madhouse. It kept me on my toes, but I think it went over well...

Even Miss Lohan was there.

Later that afternoon, DJ AM hit the stage. I've never seen him live before and I was pretty impressed. Not only was he a great DJ, he's one of the nicest people around.

Wrapping up day two was Danny Masterson AKA DJ Momjeans. He did a great job moving the crowd and they loved every minute of it. Again, this was another crazy scene.

Day three would be the easiest day for me. My set was that day, Smalltown DJ's, Frankie Chan, E-Six & Roan were scheduled and Flosstradamus ended the fest on a perfect note.

Flosstradamus closed out the festival. To see them do their thing at home was amazing. You have to see the clips...

The Weezer track was the perfect ender.

So when the festival ended, I got Smalltown a gig to play w/ DJ AM at the wrap party. On the way, they wanted a pic of themselves in front of the schedule...

It turned out that they had to play AFTER DJ AM DESTROYING IT. They were kinda stressing, but they turned it out as well...

My trip to Canada was incredibly good. I had plenty of downtime to work on music and really think about things. Introspective it was, I now have a clear view on where I want to go with all this. The focus is having fun and not giving a fuck...

I had a great time with AK and the fam @ the Astros game this past weekend. It was good to be driven somewhere, hang out and chill without having to worry about a thing. I think a trip like this is needed periodically to keep my sanity...

So, I'm off to Canada this week and I'm totally amped! I really enjoy hanging out in Calgary and this will be my first time in Vancouver, this will be good...

The hot, lazy summer begins.

SWOLL last weekend.

I purposely kept it chill and stayed around the hood this holiday weekend. Rode the bike, grilled, watched the game & stayed away from the weekend warriors. The few trips we took were for food, shopping for AK's bathing suit and to watch the new Indiana Jones flick. The movie was okay, I thought they relied on too much CG towards the end...

Copped this the other day.

I'm totally hooked on the old school video games. Found all my old systems and fired up the Nintendo and burned a few hours on some lo-fi games. Punch-out is still fresh...

New layout. Newly restored bike.

I got up this morning and something told me that I should change the layout of my blog. I've had the same one for 7 years.

I guess it was overdue.

The only bad thing about this new layout is the fact that it doesn't resize larger photos to fit. So it chops off parts of my pics. I just spent a few hours resizing the images for the last 100 posts via Blogger. If you see some shots with wacky composition, it's Blogger. Not me. Hopefully there's a fix. Bleh.

I restored my 1989 PK Ripper. At my old spot, we had a rooftop deck and I left that poor bike to be rained on forever. I told myself that I would take the time to fix it up as soon as I moved into my new place.

After taking it apart, toying with rust inhibitors, polishing the frame & forks for 8 hours, scouring the internet for parts, hitting local bike shops and tons sweat & mad blisters, the old PK is ready to roll...

Now I want to restore old BMX bikes regularly. Shit was fun!

My House.

Back in the Fall of 1999, I turned on the CASSETTE DECK & pressed record to make a House mix. This is a recording of House records that I had collected and wanted to mix. This was done on 2 busted Technics 1200's and a Rane TTM54 mixer. I found the cassette the other day in a box and listened to it for the first time in 8 years.

I got a kick out of it because...

This was done in one take. It's not perfect.

This was before Serato & music blogs.

These are records I had to dig for. I almost forgot about them.

There's a Sylk 130 track.

There's a Stacy Kidd track.

I rarely ever played House at my gigs back then.

It's sort of a time capsule.

So check it out! It's totally lo-fi. The cassette was not in perfect shape (as you can tell in the recording). The only editing I did was to seam side A to Side B.

i've been spreading myself a little too thin as of late. along with the dj schedule picking up for the holidays and things in christmas mode at the record store, i'm in the midst of moving into my new house. i have until the second week of december to be completely out of my current place. so there's time, but i have tons of things to move. including mad records. it's gonna hurt.

i've been laying low since the blur aka the acl fest. it was a crazy week, but it was fun! i met a bunch of out of town folks that are ready to work with me on some things for the winter. it's going to be ski lodges & chillin' in the mountains! jeah!

the acl afterparty at the park on sunday was one for the books! it was so dope...

the fall and early winter is now filling up, which is good, considering the disaster with the "rappers" from florida was a major setback. that nonsense threw my whole summer off...

regrouping.

with yo majesty @ irving plaza last friday.

after some quick decision making, i'm back in texas after a week in nyc. for reasons i will not divulge here, i had to pull out of the tour. i think i made a decision that will pay off in the long run...

there were some highlights...

- copping mad free gear from a stylist before the irving plaza jumpoff.
- mishka lacing me with t-shirts.
- the cute lead singer from css eating a salad next to me in the dressing room.
- playing at a models and bottles club with cosmo.
- amazing food.
- watching pete rock and questlove dj w/eleven, cosmo & aubs.
- getting wasted @ the rub and seeing haul & mason do their thing.

so now it's back to focusing on my own shit. i put the summer on hold for two possible tours, but now it's about filling the calendar and getting things going. the shortlived tour was a blow to the wallet. live and learn. :)

man, i've neglected this blog for a minute. to think that i would update this daily. i've been so busy with other things that blogging is the last thing on my mind...

if there's anything new, i will be on the road in a couple weeks with this group i am now dj'ing for. it's going to be interesting, considering they are well on their way to big things. they have a major publicist, booking agent, european representation and are sewin' up a pretty sweet record deal. i am really happy for the girls...

the tour is only two weeks, but more dates for the summer are being worked on.

while i'm on the subject of great things, i just got another offer to dj for a singer on her north american tour...it's on some arena type shit. i don't want to jinx it, but if it happens, there's a chance i will be on the road for three months straight. we'll see...

the smalltown dj's. calgary, alberta.

my weeklong trip up north was dope. the montana shows (especially saturday's) were crunked out. it's bugged to see mad bay area fools up there. it was interesting...

...big up to dj jimi scott for the montana hospitality.

calgary is one incredible town! i had a chance to see the smalltown dj's empire. a dope nightclub, clothing store and sneaker spot? oh my!

i had an amazing time dj'ing with pete and mikey at their thursday weekly. it was nothing but fast tracks all night! bmore, house and miami bass. the packed club went nuts. it was so much fun. the smalltown guys plan on flying me back there in a few months. i'm thankful for the opportunity to play up there...

calgary and montana was nothing but big skies and beautiful scenery. truly amazing...

the wednseday show in kansas city with dj premier wiped me out. the early morning casino jump-off with haul & domingo after the gig and the bumpy flight home did it for me.

after 12 hours of sleep, i'm good now.

this weekend will be chill, but it's montana (i think we're opening for e-40 there) and canada next week. i'm looking forward to chilling with smalltown pete and the calgary folks! word life.
